SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT COOK-OUT
(Click on the photos to enlarge your
view.)
The Supported Employment Program and Janitorial
Program hosted a cook-out on June 12th at Morton Park. David
Rennels (CCAR program consumer) and Leann Chupp (CCAR Job Coach)
spent several weeks planning and organizing this event.
Everyone agrees that they did a fantastic job! Morning
activities included frisbee, whiffle ball, and horse shoes.
The meal included: hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, chips,
baked beans, macaroni salad, rice crispy treats, and ice cream.
Leann, Deb, and David did a great job on the grill! David said
that they only burned one hamburger. After the meal, everyone
participated in a group game of whiffle ball. The teams
appropriately named themselves the Hatfields and the McCoys.
The McCoys won, but the Hatfield team captain vows to win in next
year's rematch.
Everyone had so much fun that we plan to make
this annual event!

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENTAL TRAINING
ANNOUNCES CHANGES
Dear
Readers,
On Monday, April 7, 2008, the contractors will arrive and begin
working on the DT Lincoln building at 7:00 a.m. The projected
completion date is 10-12 weeks. Because the orientation of the
restrooms will change and the addition of sinks with running water
in locations in the building that do not currently have them,
significant work to the plumbing and its pipes will be necessary.
The floors at DT are concrete, so this will involve quite a bit of
work and noise which will occur during program hours. We will have
ear plugs available to anyone who wants to wear them while the work
is being done. Also, if at any time the program is too noisy,
dusty, or otherwise uncomfortable, anyone will have the option to
visit the Senior Program for any length of time. During the
remodeling of the restrooms, we will use the restrooms at the
sheltered workshop and the administration building.
Here’s what will be updated: The main restrooms will be
completely overhauled. The Men’s and Women’s rooms will each add an
additional stall (bringing the total number of stalls in the Men’s
room to 2 regular stalls, one wheelchair accessible stall, and 2
urinals and the total number of stalls in the Women’s room to 3
regular stalls and one wheelchair accessible stall). Each room will
also gain 2 additional hand washing sinks. A shower room with one
toilet and sink will be in between the two restrooms.
The QMRP office and the Nurse’s office will be located
in the middle of the building so that they are closer to the
recycling areas. The Secretary’s office and file room will be moved
to the East side of the building, near our new main entrance
(currently the side door in the north classroom). The front area
will be a break room so that everyone will be able to enjoy their
breaks and meals away from the work area. The vending machines and
cooler for lunch boxes will be relocated to the break room after the
electrical upgrade in that area is completed. What is currently the
Secretary’s office will be a conference room and will receive some
minor changes to the room itself, plus a wider doorway. My office
will receive electrical upgrades, a wider doorway, and some repairs
to the walls, but will otherwise remain unchanged.
Additional upgrades to HVAC duct work and unit will also
occur. The old floor plan is available by clicking
here. Please feel free to view the changes by clicking
here.
Sincerely,
Christine Puckel

Seasonal Festivities Abound

The annual Christmas party was held at the CCAR Sheltered
Workshop Tuesday, December 20, 2005. Participants in vocational programming and
the CFS program were treated to an afternoon of gifts, food, and fun. The tables
were festively decorated with Christmas trees handmade by program consumers. The
trees were raffled off after dinner. A karaoke contest was held. This years
winner was Chas Allen. All agreed it was a wonder beginning to the holiday
season.
Birth-Through-Two Program Continues Education

The professional staff of the Birth Through Two Program recently attended a
conference presented by Dr. Ray Guarendi, Clinical Psychologist entitled "
You're a Better Parent Than You Think" & Back to the Family". Dr. Guarendi
is a father of 10, author, public speaker and a radio host. His experience
includes school districts, Head Start programs, mental health centers, substance
abuse programs and a private practice. The full day conference fulfilled a
continuing education requirement of working with families for DHS Early
Intervention.
CCAR Vocational Program Shoots for the Stars
In an effort to reward Sheltered Workshop consumers for their
work behaviors, consumers took a trip to the William M. Staerkel Planetarium in
Champaign, IL on March 18, 2005.

Prior to the trip, trivia games and movies provided a fun format for consumers
to learn about astronomy-related topics during their break-times. Chuck
VanSickle, a movie enthusiast, contributed to the space theme by bringing
Apollo 13 for downtime viewing. Homemade food prizes were awarded to
individuals who participated the activities.

In addition to trivia games, several consumers chose to work on projects at
home. Amber Daubs, Mary Madden, and Nicole Elder went to the public library and
read several books about planets. Using this information, they drew a diagram of
the planets’ locations and wrote a summary.

Several consumers interviewed relatives and friends about their memories of the
1969 moon landing. Pam Lewsader was surprised to learn that her interview
subject knew someone who thought the moon landing was staged. Kayleigh Davison
discovered that the moon landing influenced popular media. Kayleigh’s interview
source described an increase in television shows and books about space travel.

After weeks of learning about outer space, the consumers were excited to finally
visit the planetarium. Upon entering the facility, everyone was impressed by the
enormous viewing screens and theatre seating.

Consumers viewed a live presentation, entitled: Prairie Skies. The presenter
discussed sights in the night skies over Central Illinois and the myths and
legends about seasonal star patterns. In addition, consumers learned how to
locate planets and stars in the evening sky. Due to the interactive nature of
the presentation, consumers were able to answer questions and demonstrate their
astronomy knowledge.

During lunch at the Magic Wok buffet, consumers discussed the planetarium
presentation. Everyone agreed that this was a fun and educational event!

Birth-Through-Two Program Learns from the Best

Recently the Developmental Therapists from CCAR Industries
attended a workshop on Assessment & Intervention for Infants & Toddlers.
The featured speaker, Dr. Lou Rossetti is an internationally recognized
authority on services to young children and their families. He is the
author of the Rossetti Infant-Toddler Language Scale that many of our local
Speech Language Pathologists use in early intervention. CCAR’s Birth-Through-Two Program provides services to infants and toddlers with developmental
delays. They have been providing this service in the community for over 30
years.

Backpacks for Foster Children

In honor of Rotary International’s Centennial Anniversary, the Charleston Rotary
Club is joining with CCAR Industries to provide 100 backpacks filled with
personal items to the Department of Children and Family Services for local
children in foster care. Participants from the day programs at CCAR Industries
will work with Rotarians and members of Charleston Troop 410 Studio 2B to fill
the backpacks on July 6, 2004. CCAR Industries is proud to participate in this
project because it allows people with disabilities an opportunity to give back
to their community.
Children who enter
the foster care system often have little opportunity or means to carry personal
belongings with them to their temporary home. To assist these children with the
transitions, they will be provided a backpack filled with a variety of personal
items such as toothbrush, toothpaste, hair brushes or combs, coloring (or
puzzle) books, crayons, and a small stuffed animal. Being given a backpack will
help to enhance the feelings of self-worth, as well as a sense of belonging.
CCAR Industries
purchased 100 backpacks and Rotary Foundation District 6490 awarded a grant of
$1,000.00 to the Charleston Rotary Club to purchase $10.00 worth of items to
place in each backpack. Through the generosity of many local businesses,
numerous items have been donated for this project. “This gift could mean
everything to a child who has been taken from their home and would send a
message that someone does care about them. This can be a small step to
providing them some sense of belonging.” said Lyla McGuire, President of the
Charleston Rotary Club and Executive Director of CCAR Industries.
Annual Beach Party

On Friday, August 6th, 2004 the Consumers and Staff of DT Lincoln
and the Locust Street Center participated in a Beach Party/Cookout in the area
east of DT Lincoln.
Consumers and staff of DT Lincoln set up the tables and chairs, decorated the
inside of the building as well as outside and did the planning. Consumers and
staff also made the list and shopped for the food items served that day.
A permit was obtained from the Charleston public health department. All food
safety rules were observed closely, as were fire safety rules with the grill.
The menu consisted of grilled hamburgers, potato chips and baked beans. To
celebrate the August 2004 birthdays, ice cream, sherbet and cake were also
served.
Bridget Heise, daughter of Ann Heise of CFS, volunteered as Chef. Bridget is a
graduate of Kendall College in Evanston, IL, where she obtained an Associate
Degree in Culinary Arts. She is working on a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Accounting at EIU while working at the Charleston Country Club.
We also would like to thank Mr. Richard Dirksen of the Charleston Country Club
for allowing us to use his serving equipment.
Gary Nichols and his grandson, Austin, brought over the “MO Mobile” AKA, Dune
Buggy, and Marcy Cox brought in her little red Corvette. Those who wanted to
have their pictures taken with the cars were able to. Gary also donated back
scratchers and Patriotic Dog Tags, which Austin passed out to the consumers.
We would like to thank all of those who helped to make it a successful, fun
filled activity for all.
