Program Description

The Developmental Training program helps adults over age 18 to live and work in their communities.  The program assists adults with disabilities to improve their skills in daily living, learning, independence, and money management.  While not all people will be able to become completely independent, all are encouraged to be as independent as they can be.  A copy of our handbook is available here.

Lincoln Avenue Center

The Developmental Training-Lincoln Avenue Center offers a more structured schedule with emphasis on developing work skills.  This program also focuses on self-help, social, community, behavioral, and practical learning skills.  This program offers work opportunities for participants in the form of paper recycling work through a partnership with Eastern Illinois University and a car washing program which occurs on a seasonal basis.

Locust Street Center

The Developmental Training - Locust Street Program is a Total Communication and Sensory Integration Program which caters to adults with Autism and other Pervasive Developmental Disorders.  This program is specifically designed for individuals who have difficulty processing sensory information and/or have considerable communication needs.  Working with consultants, an environment was created that is able to provide appropriate sensory input, as well as a variety of structured activities for our consumers who display greater sensory needs.  Sensory integration exposes individuals to different types of stimulation, in small doses to improve tolerance of their surroundings and the sensory information they receive.  This program also incorporates total communication strategies to improve the opportunities for communication of the people who attend.  A total communication approach encompasses utilizing more than just verbal direction throughout the day.  In addition to verbal communication, objects, pictures, sign language, and gestures are also utilized.

Senior Program

The Lincoln Avenue Senior Program offers a leisure-rich atmosphere for older adults, and those who benefit from a less-    structured program.  The program encourages growth in self-help, leisure, and social skills, and also works on other skills the person would like to develop.

Consumer Comments

"I like working on recycling because it's the only job that I can work on with my feet.  I can make money."

"I like it when people come to talk to us because I learn a lot like when the fireman came to talk to us.  He told us how to be safe with fire."
