The 2013 Special Olympics was held on April 26th at O’Brien Stadium on Eastern Illinois University’s campus. Once again, the CCAR team participated in this event and had a wonderful time!
According to CCAR Special Olympics coach, Patsy Black, there were 52 CCAR program consumers registered to participate. The team began preparing and practicing in late March. They were broken into two groups that practiced on Mondays and Wednesdays or on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Practices are typically held in CCAR’s field, just south of our Administration Building entrance. Due to cold temperatures and rain, the team wasn’t able to get outdoors as much as they have in past years. However, that didn’t stop them from winning several medals! Entrants participated in events such as the softball throw, 100 meter race/walk, 100 meter wheelchair race, and the 25 or 50 meter assisted walking races.
The team chose lime green and blue for their shirt colors this year. All of the T-shirts were donated by a very generous, anonymous donor. Program consumers were accompanied by approximately 20 staff chaperones. Developmental Training consumers Kim Steffes and Jerry Walker were the banner holders who carried the CCAR banner during the opening ceremonies. Participants received free lunches with hamburgers provided by the Charleston McDonald’s.
Everyone who was involved in this event said they had a great time!
